LA VARIA E' UN OBELISCO ALTO INTORNO AI 30 METRI TRAINATO A MANO DA CIRCA 700 PERSONE CHE A TURNO LO FANNO CORRERE PER IL CORSO PRINCIPALE DEL PAESE. ALLA SOMMITA' VI SONO DUE FIGURANTI. LA MADONNA, CHE VIENE SCELTA TRA LE BAMBINE DEL PAESE E IL PADRETERNO, CHE PROTEGGE LA PICCOLA DALLE ENORMI OSCILLAZIONI CHE LA VARIA SUBISCE .

Two hundred villagers of Palmi, in southern Italy, pull a 20 ton wooden structure with a 16 metre high obelisk, called a 'Varia', during a religious festival in honour of the Virgin Mary. Sitting on top of obelisk, are a 10-year-old girl playing the part of the Virgin Mary, a man playing the role of God and 30 young girls dressed as angels. The traditional festival started five centuries ago, after a cholera epidemic in the south of Italy.
